Chris Haft brings a word of caution:
Giants hold emotional ceremony for Burns If Giants fans didn't know Sue Burns before Monday, they became well-acquainted with her during the brief but emotional pregame ceremony that honored her.

Sports does not seem to agree with this. In his own words:
Most immediately, the Giants needed an escape from their recent 3-7 road trip, which was accompanied by a predictable offensive collapse and a plunge in the NL wild-card standings.

In contrast, Mike Axisa replies:
Do not demean Bucholz, he is in high demand and if you are not familiar with him, or just try to dig up a few bad stats, how about looking at the total picture? Not the 2007 part with his MLB no hitter, but his 99IP, measly 67 hits allowed, 89K s and 30 walks. It is impossible to demean those, unless the person is just twisted.

Andrew Baggarly does a quick recap:
Johnny Utah says: July 27th, 2009 at 6:04 pm Nate s got a leg issue, but should be ok for pinch hitting I heard. How Sabean thinks moving 100lbs of Velez up to the big club will help solve lineup issues is so aggravating. As Sports says:
Garko, a former Stanford standout, was hitting .285 this season with 11 homers and 39 RBI in 78 games but had increased his value in the past 23 games by hitting .349 with five homers and 11 RBI. The "ML outfielder" that was part of the package could have been a major factor also. The Sox have 2 good ones at AA (Reddick and Kalish) plus Lin at High A ball and imagine Reddick *might* have made a difference and the other 2 are not nearly as highly projected.

DP remembers that:

Sports brings some great news:
Four runs were enough for Lincecum, who retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced and sat down eight straight to end the game. Barry Bonds, who was there in part to honor Burns, stayed until the last pitch.

Andrew Baggarly gives a bit of an idea about it:

For this reason, Andrew Baggarly says:
Outfielder Aaron Rowand said that the MRI he had Monday on his right forearm revealed a slight tear. He said he ll be unable to throw for a couple of days but will be available to pinch hit. And as I type this, Rowand just finished taking a few swings in batting practice and looked fairly normal. Bochy said it could be 4-5 days before Rowand, who is taking anti-inflammatories, is able to play defense again.

However, Sports states that:
"I don't know if anybody was thinking that we needed to do something or if there was a move that needed to be made," Lincecum said. "Hopefully, it's a step in the right direction."

In contrast, Mike Axisa replies:
i was never a huge craig hansen fan. yeah he had a nice fastball but big league hitters can hit fastballs. his trouble was finding his slider. when his slider was on it was nasty. plus he had way too much pressure put on him from being drafted and all the sox fans saying he was our closer. i always questioned his mental part of the game. every time i saw him pitch and he gave up a run or walk he went down hill from there. that is what buchholz did last year but i have see that part of him improve which gives me hope that he can become the pitcher a lot of scouts think he can. now if he will or not is the major question. i think if he keeps working hard and preparing he can. he talked about how this past off season was the hardest he has ever worked and so far it has shown. if he keeps it up he can become a very good pitcher. i still dont believe the part of the indians rejected buc for martinez i can see the part about rejecting bowden and masterson cause everything else i have read has said the indians wanted buc for martinez. if i were the indians id be asking for casey kelly as the pitcher he really impressed me with his pitcher the first half of the season. I hope next year he will stick to pitching full time and not want to play ss

For this purpose, Mike Axisa suggests:
Also now that the Giants are thought to be offering Alderson + for Victor the next 6 days could be very interesting. IMO

For this purpose, Andrew Baggarly suggests:
I suspect, though I have no evidence, that RJ is done. Them s the risks you take with a 45 year old with a history of injuries. I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with our disgrace of a short stop and our lack of anything at first base, second base, left field and centre.

Furthermore, Mike Axisa claims:
Kinda ironic as you say the Red sox should trad Buchholz to fit team needs yet call out the rangers for not trading a catching prospect as they asked for Buchholz in return for one. Boston countered with Bowden but with all the arms their system and the way their scouts described Bowden there is no way they would make that deal.

Meanwhile, DP came up with this idea:
His offspeed stuff was disgusting filth last night, and was almost unhittable. And of course, our patchwork lineup mustered 4 runs. Woohooo! I certainly groaned when I'd seen that Velez was playing.

Similarly, jonathanturley adds:
The warning signs are obviously intended to create a basis for the city to allege assumption of the risk and/or contributory negligence. Given the fact that children are running in a sprinkler near by, I fail to see the sign as a complete defense even if it were posted at the time of the accident. It is obviously foreseeable that children will take off their shoes and run to the mats. The decision to use this material was an act of gross negligence and the decision to sue this family is one of the most shameful acts that I have seen in years from municipal attorneys. Such counter lawsuits are often viewed as a way to force settlements. Whoever approved this lawsuit is, in my view, a legal menace who is serving neither the city nor the public in such abusive lawsuits.

Mike Axisa also takes into account the fol lowing fact:
I value the second trade more than the first for sure. bowden isnt as flashy but i believe he is a stable 16-10 guy, i think clay could go 23-4 or he could have bad years and go 7-15, i would rather they kept bowden because he is younger and is a classier act, clay gets shelled for half a ML season and cries the next because the sox wont bring him up, and is a hardcore partier. Package clay and masterson and the deal would be sewn up, or better yet, get roy by giving them clay, masterson, anderson and reddick, i am a sox fan so i might be biased, but i am pretty sure these deals would get them v mart or halladay, either way the redsox get an awesome player for ml parts who are valued higher than ever before and i think it is ridiculous. but that is the business so get rid of some of these guys

But Andrew Bag garly has a different opinion:
Alistair, Fish Boy Of Love says: July 27th, 2009 at 6:47 pm Welcome aboard Mr Garko. Our new clean up hitter and 1st baseman, he can also play a little left field. Nice fit. Now for Sanchez and onwards to the playoffs.

Mike Axisa notices:

Andrew Baggarly intervenes and adds:
Jay says: July 21st, 2009 at 2:17 pm gyros, I totally agree with you. Aurilia s out of gas, and his best years are long gone. We just need some more offense and we can probably take this current series with ATL and hope for the best against the rockies.

Still being unsure, Kevin Burns - Corporate Attitude Expert asks:
I can't for the life of me figure out how a student can maintain great grades in high school, outstanding GPA in college or university, master their final exams, do everything right to position themselves well to be one of the top choices for a job and then show up dressed like a bum. But there is always a silver lining - a giggle amongst the frustration. It happens when a student shows up for an interview dressed like a bum and they're applying for a job in marketing. Do you see the humor in that?

While it may be true, poster thinks:
We ve done everything in consult with the family, Slaughter said. It s going to be a very appropriate tribute to her, and the players and all of our employees are going to wear patches in memory of Sue and Harmon. It will say, Burns.

One plus hitting DH and two projects isnt “outrageous” at all, it is possibly a bit under value for a bat comparable to Bay at a time where absolutely no big bats are available. Holliday is the only Elite bat actually available on the trade market. Dunn, Martinez and Gonzalez are the three which arent available but might be able to be pried away if you are willing to overpay.

Kevin Burns - Corporate Attitude Expert remembers that:

However, poster thinks differently:
One aspect of Monday night will not be low key. The Giants are asking all fans who attend the game against the Pirates to dress in orange, as Sue Burns did every game as she sat near the home dugout.

In addition to this, Andrew Baggarly states:
prima facie says: July 27th, 2009 at 7:01 pm Whew. And I was afraid they wouldn t be able to find that coveted No. 7 hitter in this tight market.

While it may be true, Sports thinks:

Ordonez for Drew is silly. If Maggs gets 150 more plate appearances, then he is guaranteed $18 million for 2010. He is owed $9 million for the rest of this year plus a $3 million buyout. That is $80,000 per plate apperance. If he bats 5 times during a game, that is $400K! I also really, really doubt that Bucholz was offered at this time for martinez. Remember that the Sox are a bit short on SP at the moment, Wake just a couple daya ago had a cortisone shot in his chronically bad back, Smoltz has not pitched as projected and that leaves him, Lester, Beckett and Penny. Need a bat ,or not, it s not the time to be trading a starter and after the 2006 debacle of injuries ravaging the rotation and collapse, really doubt Epstein would purposely remove a starting pitcher, unless he got a really top bat back under a steal of a deal and VMart is not a top bat like AGone.

That was another key, Sabean said: Adding thump without completely blocking off Ishikawa's development.Still to be determined: Will Garko, a solid hitter squeezed out in Cleveland, really make a difference now and next season? And will Barnes, 21 and pitching well at Single-A San Jose this season, make the Giants regret this trade at some future date?

Andrew Baggarly thinks about it:
kg says: July 21st, 2009 at 7:43 pm One thing to remember is that Bowker really is getting only his second chance after opposing pitchers figured him out early last year (and remember he had REALLY opened up hot with 9 homers in the first few weeks of the season. I can t remember the first year Frandsen got a shot at the majors, but it must be at least two years ago and perhaps more; losing a whole year might be his downfall; and Ishikawa also got a bit of a shot I think as long ago as 2005. So Bochy might not be totally hypocritical in saying he wants to give Bowker a bit of a look; and he did swing the bat pretty well today on a day when few did. Gadfry, it was really embarrassing to see our cleanup hitter only get one hit, and that by beating out an infield squib. Ouch. I m more in the long-range camp; I think the Giants have been playing very well but the pitching won t be as good in the second half and the hitting probably won t be either, so I wouldn t want to lose long-t erm pitching prospects in hopes of nabbing this year s wild card. Although if Johnson returns, it would be fun to go through playoff series with Timmy, Matt and Unit or Sanchez if he keeps pulling it together.

While it may be true, Mike Axisa thinks:
Prospect A is David Huff and Prospect B is Clay Buchholz. Posted by: BigCuyahoga | July 26, 2009 at 11:44 AM As a Red Sox fan, I am in total agreement on the over-hype machine that follows Buchholz. To me, Masterson is a far better pitcher bc he can handle the big leagues and can be put in the pen and spot start.

Andrew Baggarly is not really sure about that:

Sports explains:
"When I first came over here and first Advertisement met her, she made you feel comfortable and welcome," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said before the game. "And she did that with everybody. You remembered that and appreciated it. She was the team mom and these were her boys."

Still being unsure, jonathanturley asks:
There have long been complaints about New York playgrounds using the material, here . There have been other cases around the country ( here ) that should put park officials on notice that these mats are unacceptable for playgrounds. Past cases include:

Sports gives a bit of an idea about it:
It remains to be seen whether Garko will be in the lineup today for the second game of the series. The Indians were in Anaheim on Monday facing the Angels.

Buchholz for Martinez wasnt a bad offer but i think Cleveland could do a little bit better than that. Posted by: NYYLastPlace4ever | July 26, 2009 at 09:16 AM

Still not being convinced, Mike Axisa replies:
Are you the same guy who keeps popping into these forums and posting about Rich Gedman = Victor Martinez? I guess that type of confusion is to be expected from a sox fan living in NJ. Posted by: Tribe In 09 | July 26, 2009 at 11:40 AM

In response, Mike Axisa claims:
Nick Cafardo reports that the Indians turned down an offer of Clay Buchholz for Victor Martinez according to an NL scout. Honestly i would love to know who the NL scout is. The Tribe need to go in full blown rebuild mode and trade V-Mart and Lee should be gone by friday IMO. And i find it hard to believe that the Indians would turn down a deal for Clay B. Andrew Baggarly tells the real story:

In contrast, Mike Axisa replies:
This mancrush that the Nation has for Buchholz is getting ridiculous. Some say stupid things like "I would never trade Buchholz for Halladay, Buchholz will have a better career." This argument was used with Johan Santana as well.

But Kevin Burns - Corporate Attitude Expert says that's not all:

In contrast, Mike Axisa replies:
Wow. Sounds like the writers got a little carried away with the gossip fest. Based on the heretofore absurd fascination that Bucholtz might possibly be a future ace I seriously doubt Boston would offer him straight up for Martinez even if it might be a reasonable trade. Or that Cleveland would refuse it. Or that Cleveland would refuse the other offer either (which is probably a better offer). Or that a Drew/Mags swap would EVER be considered. Just goes to show there s always something to make up rumors about. While we re in the mood how about chewing on this one. Boston s talking to Baltimore about getting Sherrill and Wigginton in a package deal involving DelCarmen and prospects. Posted by: Lock | July 26, 2009 at 09:55 AM

Kevin Burns - Corporate Attitude Expert objects:
The New York Post is reporting today about a 27-year-old college student at Monroe College in New York who is now suing the college for $70,000, which is the cost of her tuition. Is she suing because she didn't get a quality education? No. She is suing the college because after spending $70,000 and achieving only a 2.7 GPA (which is a B-) she is ticked off that the college didn't find her a job to go with her new diploma.

Before going any further, poster wants to get this straight:
Staci Slaughter, the Giants senior vice president of communications, said the team will show a video tribute and ask for a moment of silence, with the Burns family on the field.

Mike Axisa comes with the facts:
Shapiro is a fool if he turned down Buccholz for Martinez. I m sure Theo would ve thrown in a lower level guy as well.
